My Cold Brew Method

It is surprising that it took me, a resident of Durban, where the summers are hot and the winters non existent, this long to start appreciating the simplicity and beauty that is, the Cold Brew. I understand that there are many interpretations of what constitutes a cold brew, but after numerous blog posts, YouTube videos and personal attempts, this is the method that I have settled on.

Equipment Required:

  • Mason Jar or similar for storage

  • French Press

  • Scale (preferred)/ measured scoop

  • Timer

Basic Steps:

I use a 1:15 ratio with 30 g of coffee and 450 g of water

  1. Grind Coffee Coarse and pour into mason jar

  2. Pour 100 g of hot water over coffee and stir for 10 seconds

  3. Wait for 1 minute and then pour remaining water

  4. Close the jar and set aside in a cool place for 24 hours

  5. Thereafter, filter the coffee using a French Press

  6. Store the coffee in the fridge for use, as needed.

I really wish that I could tell you how long it stayed in the fridge for. Unfortunately (for you 😊), I have never kept it longer than two days. When filtering the coffee, I tend to pour slowly from the mason jar, into the French Press, leaving as much grounds in the mason jar as possible. I then wait a little while for the coffee to settle in the French Press, before plunging and pouring out. You will get some grounds in your cold brew, so be weary of that when having our last glass of coffee from a batch. I have attempted using a Hario V60 to filter the cold brew but it takes a very long time to filter, as compared to the French Press. My preferred method of drinking the Cold Brew is in an Espresso Cup, but my family love using it to make a Coffee Milk Shake.
